After police clarification, BJP says its office damaged in ‘grenade blast’

BJP, a ruling partner with PDP in the state, on Sunday claimed that its office suffered minor damages in a grenade blast at Jawahar Nagar here even as police last evening clarified that no attack took place and that rumour mongers will be sternly dealt with under the law.

“BJP Kashmir unit today held a meeting at Srinagar office where all the office bearers condemned the attack on the office yesterday by militants where grenade was through (thrown) at the premises which caused minor damage to the building at Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar. However thanks to almighty that no casualties happened,” reads a statement issued by BJP here.

“It is pertinent to mention that there has been increase in activities of the party in Kashmir from past few months and recently there has been successful Tiranga yatra for the first time on Independence Day in Kashmir and Flag Hoisting at TRC Chowk besides Flag Hoisting at BJP office Srinagar..which is giving sleepless nights to anti-nationals.”

The meeting was attended by National Vice President BJP youth wing Er Aijaz Hussian, Media Secretary Kashmir Altaf Thakur, General Secretary Srinagar and protocol In-charge Arif Raja, Vice President BJP Srinagar ‘Ashok Ji’ and Asif Masoodi besides other senior office Bearers of Kashmir unit, the statement added.

On Saturday evening, police issued a statement that some rumours were circulating on social media regarding alleged attack and ransacking of an office of ‘a political party’ at Raj Bagh.

“This is to clarify that no such incident has taken place. However, some loud sound was heard which is being verified. There is no apparent damage to the office or neighbouring buildings.  The matter is being investigated into,” a police spokesman said, adding, “Strict action under the law will be taken against rumour mongers.”
