JRL concerned over ‘death threat’ to religious cleric

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), on Friday expressed concern over the death threats served to religious cleric and columnist, Altaf Hussain Nadvi on social media.

In a joint statement the leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik while condemning the incident said that Nadvi is a well-respected columnist. “In civilized societies, there is a space for different opinions but on mere differences, the death threats seem to be a part of conspiracy.”

The leadership also condemned the “ill treatment” meted out to political prisoners and said that the detention period of prisoners is being prolonged on one pretext or the other. Terming it a political vendetta, the leadership expressed concerns about the falling health of Aasiya Andrabi in Amphala jail.

Demanding immediate release of Masarat Alam Bhat, Aasiya Andrabi, and scores of others, the leadership said that these repressive tactics can’t break their resolve.

Resistance leaders said that most of the prisoners were bailed out by the court, however, were repeatedly slapped with PSA, thus prolonging their detention.

Expressing concern over those detained by NIA including Shabir Ahmad Shah, Peer Saif ullah, Shahid-ul-Islam, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Ayaz Akbar, Raja Meraj-u-Din, Nayem Ahmad Khan and Farooq Ahmed, the leadership said that they are being subjected to ill and inhuman treatment by jail authorities and have even been denied the basic facilities needed for survival.
