JKHA protests governments’ apathy

Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association Tuesday staged a protest against the non-implementation of persons with Disability Act, 2016 recently passed by the  Government of India.

The members of the association who were protesting here in Press Colony in Lal chowk were arrested ahead of their supposed protest march to Raj Bhawan.

Ahead of the arrest of the association members, President of the association Abdul Rashid Bhat said, “Despite assurance from Chief Minster, our issues weren’t solved by the coalition government.”

He said that about five lakh handicapped people are living a miserable life due to government’s apathy.

“On 29 January, 2017, CM assured us that our issues will be resolved in a meeting in presence of Minister of Social Welfare, Sajad Gani Lone and Asiya Naqash, but unfortunately six months have passed and nobody has paid any attention,” he said.

The association had threatened to launch an indefinite hunger strike from August 1 if their demands are not met.

“If our demands are not met, we will start a hunger strike from August 1 for an indefinite period,” Abdul Rashid Bhat said.

Meanwhile, the members of the Association were arrested and taken to Police Station Kothi Bagh.
