PCI concerned over closure of media houses, retrenchment of journalists

The Press Council of India (PCI) has expressed concern over the growing challenges being faced by the news media industry in the country, resulting in closing down of media houses and mass retrenchment of the journalists.

“The Council urges all the stakeholders to appreciate the direct impact that the closing down of the media houses and retrenchment of journalists will have on the lives and livelihood of journos,” stated a Resolution adopted at an emergency meeting of the PCI, convened here in this regard under the Chairmanship of Justice C K Prasad Chairman Press Council of India.

The meeting discussed in detail the editorial and commercial pressures being faced by the media industry resulting in sudden retrenchment of hundreds of journalists across the country in recent months.

The meeting further urged all the stakeholders to appreciate the impact such actions will have on the freedom of the press to fulfill its mandate, and for the people to receive unfettered news, views and comments.
