UN chief urges Pakistan, India to resolve Kashmir issue through dialogue

UN chief Antonio Guterres  today urged Pakistan and India to resolve Kashmir issue through engagement and dialogue.

“We reiterate the need for the parties to find a peaceful solution through engagement and dialogue,” Guterres’ spokesperson, Dujarric said at a daily press on Thursday.

Dujarric’s remarks came when he was asked if the Secretary-General is paying attention to the situation in the region or “we are just waiting for some sort of big tragedy to occur for the Secretary-General to take attention.”

Pertinently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Guterres had met in St Petersburg earlier in June on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. During the meeting, Modi had stressed on multilateralism to address global challenges such as terrorism.

UN chief had also met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum at Davos in January and in Astana in June on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
