National Conference President and Member of Parliament from Srinagar, Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Monday said the rise in incidents of domestic violence against women was alarming and called for a genuine introspection and united action from the society.
Addressing the audience at an event to launch two books – “Ladakh and Nanak Rinpoche” and “Woman of Substantial Character” authored by Commodore D. S. Sodhi, Dr. Farooq Abdullah congratulated Commodore Sodhi for his continued efforts in serving the people of the State and for his compassion towards the society.
The books have been authored by a son of the soil, Commodore D. S. Sodhi whose earlier books “Kashmir and the Sikhs – An Insight” and “Historical Sikh Shrines of Jammu and Kashmir” were also released by Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The book “Ladakh and Nanak Rinpoche” gives insight into the historical connection of Sikhs with Ladakh, Life of Guru Padmasambhava, travel of Nanak Lama to Sikkim and Tibet and travel of Guru Nanak Rinpoche to Ladakh.
Through the second book “Woman of Substantial Character”, Commodore Sodhi has made an attempt to remind the readers about the important role a woman plays in our lives. “As a result of the patriarchal bearings of the society, the female gender has been at the receiving end of innumerable forms of indiscrimination.
The books also tell the story of a woman of substantial character who lived a dignified life with complete dedication and commitment towards her children and society”, the author, Commodore D. S. Sodhi said on the occasion.
Dr. Farooq Abdullah complimented Cmde Sodhi for the impressive research work done by him to write these books. He observed that the work would be useful for promoting brotherhood and amity among the people of all communities.
He also appreciated the social message being conveyed by Cmde Sodhi through his books “Woman of Substantial Character”. Dr. Farooq Abdullah also lauded Cmde Sodhi for his role during 2014 floods as also for the concern shown by him for the people of Kashmir from time to time.
Cmde Sodhi, a recipient of the coveted Nao Sena Medal by President of India, is a son of the soil from Baramulla, Kashmir. After completing his engineering from REC, Srinagar, he joined Indian Navy in 1983. A dedicated and sincere officer, he has performed his duties with utmost dedication. He is an alumnus of IIT, Delhi and College of Naval Warfare.
