Hurriyat leadership-sponsored protest call after the Friday prayers witnessed clashes in north Kashmir’s Sopore township.
Soon after the Friday prayer, several youth assembled outside the Jamia Masjid area of the town. They raised anti-government and pro-freedom slogans. The protesters marched towards the Main Chowk area and hurled stones on forces deployed in the Main Bazaar area.
To control and disburse them, the security forces had to use heavy tear smoke shelling that triggered clashes in the area.
The protests continued for several hours, eyewitnesses said.
