Shopian residents allege high-handedness of forces

The residents of Saidpora Payeen village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, on Tuesday, blocked the main road protesting the alleged high-handedness of army and paramilitary forces.

They alleged that the forces had vandalized property and beaten locals in the village on Monday evening.

They said, “As people were heading towards masjids for Iftari, forces entered the village and started damaging the parked vehicles, threw stones on the roofs of the houses and tried to damage property with gun butts. Announcements were made on the masjid loud speakers. Save us please, they will kill us.”

The residents said that before the villagers assembled to stop them, forces had already burnt a bike, damaged vehicles and had beat up a few locals.

The locals are demanding action against the forces involved. Meanwhile, a top police official said he did not have any information about the incident. He said, “We will look into the matter.”
