City roads in shambles, locals rue apathy of authorities

Call it official apathy or lackadaisical approach of the government, but a number of city roads are in a dilapidated condition with the authorities doing little to repair them.

Locals from various areas said that authorities have left most of the dilapidated roads in city unattended.

A delegation of locals from Rambagh area said, “Despite being an important road link, we fail to understand why officials have never bothered to repair it. Due to non-maintenance of the road, large potholes have developed causing inconvenience to the commuters.”

The residents of Haft Chinar blamed incomplete Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover, a cause of dilapidated roads.

They said, “Since the construction work on the project started, the road on this route has been neglected and no black-topping has taken place so far.”

Not only local residents, but transporters are also up in arms against the administration for failing to repair the city roads.

A Sumo taxi driver, who plies commercial vehicle on Hazratbal route said, “We pay taxes, but fail to understand why government fails to provide quality roads. Many drivers simply refuse to take passengers on this route as it damages their vehicles.”

Not just the commuters, commercial vehicle operators, but shopkeepers too are bearing the brunt of dilapidated condition of the roads. The shopkeepers say they too are facing slump in business due to damaged roads.

A local shopkeeper at Solina market said, “We have developed chest complications due to dust emanating from the road which is prompting us to stay indoors.”

In the absence of timely repairs, most of the roads, including the ones at Jehangir Chowk, Ram Munshi Bagh, Shivpora, Sonwar, Batwara, Bemina, Batmaloo, Qamarwari, Mehjoor Nagar, Rambagh are dotted with potholes.

The Chief Engineer R&B Kashmir, Sheikh Abdul Hamid, said “Our department is doing the job. We are black-topping the city roads.”
