Police fails to check bank robbery incidents

 

The robbery incidents at the banks in the state has been going on unabated.

The valley has witnessed several such incidents in the past. In a recent incident police foiled an infiltration bid in Budgam district on Saturday.

Officials said that an ATM guard foiled an attempt to rob a bank by unidentified persons in the Chadoora area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

The robbers according to the officials were trying to break into the bank, but the security guard stationed there raised an alarm.

According to police reports, the robbers had broken a window of the bank when the ATM guard noticed them. The guard raised an alarm following which hundreds of locals rushed towards the bank, forcing the robbers to flee.

On 1 February police in Rajouri district claimed to have foiled a major attempt to loot a bank located in Palma village.

SSP Rajouri Rajeshwar Singh according to the reports had said that a specific input was received about attempt to loot a bank after which a team led by SHO Rajouri Chaman Gorka laid trap around the bank premises in late night hours.

“Four thieves appeared on the scene and tried to break open the locks of the bank when cops stationed around the premises nabbed one of them while other three managed to flee, by taking advantage of darkness,” he had  said.

On Feb 16, this year, four masked gunmen have looted another branch of J&K Bank in Turqwangam village in Shopian district of south Kashmir.

Reports quoting police officials said that four armed men with their faces covered, believed to be militants entered the J&K Bank branch at Turqwangam of Shopian district in south Kashmir.

They managed to loot about Rs 3 lakh from the bank and also fired some shots in air before leaving from the spot. The area has been cordoned off.

On Mar 24, this year, a bank robbery by two suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district was successfully foiled.  The unarmed militants bid to rob Jammu and Kashmir bank was successfully thwarted by the bank’s security guard who threw chilli powder at them when they were trying to snatch his rifle. The militants later fled the spot.

On Apr 28, this year, police claimed to have foiled an attempt by militants to rob a bank in Anantnag district of Kashmir and arrested one of them.

They said that two armed men entered into a branch of Jammu and Kashmir bank on the tehsil office premises in Mehandi Kadal in Anantnag.

Security personnel deployed there tried to apprehend the militants, but they opened fire, a police official said.

On May 1, this year, four-five militants attacked a van of Jammu and Kashmir bank. In the attack, militants killed five policemen and two security guards of the bank.

On May 02, this year, gunmen attacked a branch of Ellaquai Dehati Bank on Tuesday in Kulgam district. The loot was at least of Rs 65,000.

According to police, militants clad in combat fatigues intercepted the van near Kulgam but their robbery bid was foiled. The van was returning after depositing  Rs 18 lakh at the branch in Manzgam Ahrabal.

On May 03, this year, two banks were attacked within hours by unidentified gunmen. The first incident took place in an Ellaquai Dehati Bank branch in Waibug. Four armed militants stormed the branch office and looted Rs 3-4 lakh.

The bank did not have any CCTV surveillance cameras or any other recording devices to record the act.

A few hours later, a Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch was attacked in Nehama by militants. The loot amount is yet to be ascertained.

On Nov 21, last year (2016), suspected militants robbed a bank in Chrar-e-Sharief area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, decamping with nearly Rs 13 lakh cash, police said.

On Dec 15, 2016, suspected militants looted about Rs 10 lakhs from a bank in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police had said.

They had said that a group of four gunmen barged into the Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch at Rantipora in Pulwama district and decamped with 9.84 lakh rupees.

On Dec 08, 2016, suspected militants had looted Rs 13.38 lakhs from Jammu and Bank branch at Arihal in Pulwama district.
