In a strange incident, students on Monday kidnapped a Police cop and beat him inside the campus of Gandhi Memorial College here during the clashes with Police.

Witnesses said students from Gandhi Memorial College and MP ML Higher Secondary School (HSS) assembled and took out a protest march on street, triggering chaos in the area.

They said the students were protesting against the use of force on students over the past weeks.

“Students assembled on main road and raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans,” witnesses said.

Amid the protests, the students caught hold of a police cop in civvies and beat him inside the college premises.

“The police cop was in civvies and was identified by students who dragged him inside the campus. He was beaten by the students but the staff members intervened and rescued him,” the witnesses said.

They said the cop was kept inside a room inside the campus who, was later taken away by police by drilling a hole into the wall.

“The cop sustained injuries after being beaten by students and was shifted to a local hospital for treatment,” the witnesses said.

Meanwhile, several students, witnesses said were injured during the clashes with police and were shifted to hospital for treatment.

A police official also confirmed the development and said a cop was kidnapped and beaten by the students during the protests staged by students in the area.

“He was in civvies but was somehow identified by students who dragged him inside the campus and beat him leaving his arm fractured,” a police official said. He said the cop is posted at Mahraj Gunj Police station.

Meanwhile, witnesses said the police party deployed in the area lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesting students, triggering clashes.

The authorities in Gandhi Memorial College said the protests were staged by students from MP HSS who entered forcibly entered inside the campus soon after the classes started in the College.

“The students from MP school entered the campus but the college staff intervened and motivated the students to leave the campus,” said a Professor posted at Gandhi Memorial College.

He said there was no disruption in class work as the school students were asked to leave the campus. “Our classes continued despite the protests by school students in morning,” he said.

He however said the Gandhi college students were involved after the students re-assembled in the afternoon and staged protests outside the campus. “Students staged massive protests and also beat a police cop in civvies. This time studenst from our college were also involved in protest,” he said.

The college authorities however said the police didn’t enter the campus during the clashes. “There were some inhalation problems due to the smoke that was emanating from tear gas shells lobbed on protesting students but no police cop entered the campus,” the college staff said.

Meanwhile, reports said that Police barred media persons from covering the clashes.
