Major Leetul Gogoi, the army officer who tied a civilian to the bonnet of a jeep as a ‘ human shield’ inn central Kashmir’s Budgam district, was awarded the Army Chief Commendation Card for sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations, Times Of India reported.
The video which was shot on April 9, when Srinagar by-polls were held, and posted on social media instantly went viral.
The video sparked a major controversy, with one faction condemning the army’s action while the other commended their ingenuity.
Investigation by the Jammu and Kashmir police, which lodged an FIR against the security forces in light of the incident, revealed that it was Gogoi who had tied the man to the jeep’s bonnet as a ‘human shield’.
A Court of Inquiry was instituted against the major and it is yet to hand in a report on its findings.
