Police have failed to take any action against the BSF personnel who are accused of having killed a youth on April 15, days after the violence during parliamentary elections on April 9 here.

On April 15 after the violence during the elections for Srinagar parliamentary seat, a youth was killed allegedly by BSF personnel after they claimed that their party was fired upon.

The youth was identified as Sajad Hussain Sheikh of Chandoosa, Baramulla, and he shot dead on the roadside. Though police have registered a case of murder at Batmaloo police station, however no arrests have been made so far. 

Twenty two year old Sajjad was running a barbecue kiosk at Reke Chowk, Batamaloo, and was killed in the firing as the BSF personnel opened fire on the youth who were protesting in the area.

The killing had triggered Kashmir wide protests and the police had initially stated that there was no deployment of the force personnel in the area. A BSF party which was driving through the area had fired upon the youth in which Sajad lost his life, investigations in the case have revealed.

“We have not made any arrests so far in the case, but have started the correspondence with the BSF officials. We have written to them asking that they should identify those who were involved in the killing. We will also be recording the statements of the family and other witnesses,’’ said a senior police official.

Police had registered the case of murder after widespread protests over the killing. Sajad Shiekh was out on the road late evening, when the force personnel restored to firing in which he lost his life. BSF has however lodged a complaint against the youth with the police that its sub inspector rank officer as well as some other personnel had come under heavy attack of stone pelters in Batamaloo. They have alleged that the deceased boy was also among the stone pelters and had tried to snatch away their weapon.

A police official, investigating the case, said on the condition of anonymity that they have not been able to make any arrests in the case due to the lack of evidence.

“We have registered the case.  We have asked the relatives of the deceased that they should come forward  for recording their statements and the investigation in the case is going on.’’
