Banning TV channels, social media a move to isolate Kashmiris: Mirwaiz

Terming the ban on almost three dozen TV channels in Kashmir as a fascist approach of the government, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said that the real purpose behind all these actions is to isolate the Kashmiri population. He said the authorities do not want people of Kashmir to have access to information other than what Centre shows in its media channel in the state.

Mirwaiz said that it is beyond comprehension how channels preaching Islamic teachings and values are responsible for spreading unrest in Kashmir. He said that the fact remains that the current unrest in Kashmir is due to the political instability and anti-people policies of the Centre and their local collaborators in the state.

He said that the restriction on social media and TV channels in Kashmir can further deteriorate the situation in the state. “In modern times this type of thinking and such tactics of oppression reflect authoritarian mindset. A war has already been started against the people of Kashmir at all levels and the gagging of media to prevent the reality from reaching the world will also prove a failure like such other oppressive acts have proven so far.”

He paid tributes to the martyrs of Khanyar in Srinagar on their 27th anniversary at a prayer meeting which was attended by many Hurriyat leaders and activist including, Ghulam Nabi Zaki, Sufi Mushtaq Ahmad, Muhammad Shafi Khan, Advocate Yasir Dalal, Peer Ghulam Nabi, Habib ul Rangrez, Mohd Syed Dedmari, Farooq Ahmad Matoo, M.Y Masoodi and a large number of people.

Meanwhile Hurriyat (M) spokesperson condemned the wanton use of inhuman and brutal force including tear gas shells and pellets against the students in Budgam, Pulwama, Qalamabad Langate, Srinagar, Zainakote and Tral. The spokesman also demanded the immediate release of all arrested students.
