Develop water saving habits, assembly speaker to people

Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta and Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control Sham Lal Choudhary today dedicated six tube wells to the people here at Channi Himmat, Narwal and Sainik Colony.

MLA, Samba DK Manyal, Chief Engineer, PHE Susheel Aima, local people and other senior officers of the department were also present on the occasion.

While addressing the gathering, the Speaker said that as responsible citizens people should realize the importance of water and develop water saving habits.

He further said that the need of the hour is to save every drop of water and use it judiciously to save the coming generations from the threat of water crisis.

The PHE Minster said that the department has put in strenuous efforts to complet these tube wells and commissioned at the onset of the summer season to meet the increased demand.

“Several more projects are in the pipeline which will help in streamlining the water supply in Jammu”, he informed.

He also reiterated government’s commitment to provide safe and clean drinking water to the people of the State.

    MLA, DK Manyal said several revolutionary steps have been taken by the government for providing all basic amenities to the people at their doorsteps. He also asked the ex-servicemen and other educated citizens to come forward and assist the government in creating awareness among the people about benefits of saving water.

The six newly commissioned tube wells include one at Ambica Colony, Greater Jammu constructed at the cost of Rs. 1.5 crore. The tube well having a discharge capacity of 30,000 gallons per hour (GPH) would benefit more than 20,000 people living in Greater Jammu and Deep Nagar.

Another tube well was commissioned at Channi Himmat, Sector-7 which has been completed at a cost of Rs. 2 crore with a discharge capacity of 30,000 GPH to benefit more than 20,000 people residing in Sectors – 3, 4 and 7 of   the area.

The tube well constructed at the cost of Rs. 1.5 crore at CPS, Narwal has a discharge capacity of 20,000 GPH and it would streamline the water supply to Bathindi, Thanger and Raika.

The tube well constructed at Fruit Market, Narwal at the cost of Rs. 1.5 crore has a discharge capacity of 33,000 GPH and it would   benefit more than 22,000 people and traders of fruit market.

Two tube wells have been constructed at Sainik Colony Sector-F and Sainik Colony Sector-C at the cost of Rs. 1.8 crore and 1.5 crore respectively. The tube wells having a discharge capacity of 21,000 GPH and 17,000 GPH respectively would benefit more than 25,500 people living in Sectors – C, F and G in Sainik Colony area.

All the six tube wells have been constructed by Economic Reconstruction Agency.

Earlier, the PHE Minister also chaired a meeting to review the progress under four components of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) including Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme, har Khet Ko Pani, Per Drop More Crop and Watershed Development in Jammu.

During the meeting, the Minister directed the officers of the concerned departments to work in synergy to ensure that the benefit of PMKSY reaches the farmers.

He further said that efforts should be made to save existing water sources and creating awareness among the people about using the water judiciously.

Chief Engineer I&FC, Chief Engineer RTIC, Director Agriculture Department, Director CWC, Chief Agriculture Officer and other senior officers participated in the meeting.
