In view of the student protests that rocked city Centre Lal chowk, the government has decided to suspend classwork in three government schools in Srinagar on Wednesday.
Officials in district administration said the classwork work will remain suspended at Government Girls Higher Secondary School (HSS) Kothi Bagh, MP School in old city and SP HSS.
“The classwork in the three schools will remain suspended while as other colleges and schools in city will function normally,” Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Lone said.
Officials said decision to suspend the classwork in the three schools was taken to avoid law and order situation in the area.
“On Monday students from these schools erupted in protests which caused chaos in city centre and forced police to use tear gas shelling,” the official said.
The officials said there were apprehensions of protests in these schools on Wednesday and the authorities decided to suspend the teaching work.
“We took Police authorities on board to suspend teaching work in these schools,” he said.
On Monday clashes erupted in commercial hub Lal chowk after students from SP HSS took out a protest march at MA road Srinagar.
The clashes later spread to Women’s College MA road as well.
The situation deteriorated after clashes spread to Lal chowk areas wherein girl students from Kothi Bagh HSS engaged themselves in stone pelting triggering clashes with police.
During the clashes two students, City police chief, SP city east area, SDPO Kothi Bagh and other dozen police cops sustained injuries. Six youth were arrested by police during clashes at MA road.
The minister for education Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari had said that precautionary measures will be put in place to avoid entry of outsiders in SP HSS.
“Police will be deployed from bund area on backside of SP school to avoid entry of outsiders who participated in stone pelting with SP school students,” he had said.
