Ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Gani Dar (Vakil) was shot dead in a suspected militant attack in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday, police said.
Manzoor Ahmad, a senior police official said that the PDP district president Pulwama, Dar was fired upon by militants while he was travelling between Pahoo and Pinglina villages of the district.
Sources close to Dar said that he came from his home (Rahmoo village) to Pulwama in his own car, then he took the bolero vehicle that was recently allotted to him few days back and he was scheduled to visit Srinagar.
As per eyewitness, suspected militants who were travelling in Tavera vehicle intercepted Gani’s vehicle.
The gunmen dragged him out of the vehicle and then fired at him from close range, the witnesses added.
“The injured Dar was shifted to district hospital Pulwama, from where he was referred to SMHS, where he breathed his last,” police added.
Dar was accompanied by his one escort but he managed to flee from the spot unhurt, police sources added.
Soon after the incident police cordoned off the area and intensified checking and frisking operations in the entire area.
No militant outfit has claimed the responsibility of his killing yet
The attack on the PDP leader came on a day when Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and discussed the prevailing situation in the state.
Pertinently, south Kashmir which has been a center stage for pro freedom rallies and protests since July 2016 has seen increased attacks on mainstream politicians.
