SRINAGAR: Travel Agents Association of Kashmir (TAAK) has appealed Jammu and Kashmir government to promote Toasmaidan as a tourist destination, as it has potential of being round the year destination.
“The nature has bestowed this place with bounty of wealth in every respect and that needs to be harnessed in the right manner by bringing the place on the tourism map,” president, TAAK Peerzada Fayiaz said in a statement here on Thursday.
Fayiaz while appreciating the role of the ministry of tourism in developing the tourist sites throughout the state on large scale said that Tosamaidan can save lives and play an important role in not only boosting the economic status of the area but Kashmir as a whole.
TAAK president said that the place can be a good tourist destination and attract large number of tourists both domestic and international. TAAK is of the opinion that Toasmaidan is attractive place which can be developed as a world class tourist destination.
TAAK also proposed the formation of development authority in the name of Toasmaidan.
“TAAK has pledged with people to lead from the front in order to save the virgin meadow Toasmaidan and bring it into the tourism map,” general secretary, TAAK, Shaukat Putoo said and urged the concerned ministry and the Tourism Department, to save the tourism destination.
Toasmaidan, a vast meadow in central Kashmir’s Budgam district is being used by the Indian Army as a firing range since 1980, after it was leased by the Jammu and Kashmir government to them. Lease of Toasmaidan to Indian Army, which is expiring in April 2014, was extended for 10 years by PDP led government in 2004. There has been lot of resistance from the locals and people associated with tourism trade for extending the lease to Army any further.
