‘Rs 27 lakh penalty for carrying goods illegally’

Srinagar: Commercial Taxes Department Monday claimed to have slapped  penalty of more than Rs 27 lakh on  two truck drivers who were carrying a large quantity of copper scrap and 155 quintals of polythene carry bags illegally.
Giving details Commercial Taxes Officer, Checkpost Lowermunda, Hamid Gania said a vehicle bearing No: JK03/6922 was found carrying 8070 Kgs of copper scrap, copper circles, aluminum utensils of M/S Vardhman Bartan Store, Jammu and M/S Sharma Metal Traders, Jammu without any valid documents.
He said, the market value of the goods was assessed at Rs 35.92 lakh and penalty under the provisions of the J&K VAT Act, 2005 was imposed on the driver/owner of the vehicle and owner of goods.
The total penalty of Rs 25.14 lakh was imposed and recovered in full from the driver/owner of the vehicle and owner of the goods, CTO said.
“Another vehicle bearing No: JK03B/7364 while carrying non-woven carry bags of M/s Carry Well, Srinagar supplied by M/s Bansal Traders, New Delhi carried through transporter M/s Lucky International Transport Company, Delhi has kept 57 bags (weighing 25 Kg each bag) of polythene carry bags hidden among the non-woven carry bags,” he said.
“The vehicle along with goods was seized and action under the provisions of J&K VAT Act, 2005 was taken and penalty to the tune of Rs 2.1 lakh was imposed and recovered from the driver of the vehicle/owner of the  goods and dealer,” Gani said.
