Handwara: Peoples Conference staged a protest in Handwara on Thursday, accusing the NC-led government of disempowering the institution of the MLA.
PC workers organized a massive protest gathering against what they described as the weakening of the MLA’s role by the incumbent regime.
Chanting pro-PC slogans, party leaders criticized the government for keeping Lone out of the loop regarding official functions in his constituency.
“They are eroding the institution of MLAs. The MLA is an institution. Omar Abdullah is crying that he doesn’t have powers and should be given statehood, but on the other hand he is conspiring to weaken MLAs,” State Secretary (Organisation) Sheikh Muhammad Imran told the protest rally.
He added that even the MLAs of the ruling party are being maltreated by the government. “His own MLAs didn’t participate in the programmes of the Deputy CM in Rajouri,” he alleged.
The protest was held on the same day the Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Javid Rana is visiting Handwara.
Last month, Lone, the vocal critic of the government, was not invited to a function organized for the inauguration of a bridge in his segment.
As per a circular issued by the General Administration Department, MLAs are to be invited to all official functions in their respective constituencies—(KNO)
