Srinagar: In a significant move to combat the rising menace of narcotics under the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan, J&K Police has intensified its anti-drug operations across the region, leading to the arrest of a drug peddler in Anantnag and the destruction of wild cannabis cultivation in Baramulla and Sopore.
During a routine checkpoint at Watikash Yadibagh, a police team from Police Station Utrasoo intercepted a motorcycle with registration number JK03C-4427. The rider, Irfan Ahmad Khan of Baighpora Songlan, was found to be in possession of approximately 22 grams of charas. He was immediately detained, and the contraband seized in accordance with legal procedures, marking a vital step in dismantling local narcotics networks.
In Baramulla, police launched a special drive targeting wild cannabis (Bhung) growing on public and uncultivated lands in the Aglar Wussan area. The operation resulted in the destruction of sprawling cannabis plants, preventing their potential misuse for illegal drug activities. Similar efforts took place in Sopore, where wild cannabis cultivation spread over several kanals in villages like Matipora, Rohama, and Ghat Palhalan. These crops were uprooted and destroyed in collaboration with revenue officials, directly tackling the source of locally available contraband.
Alongside destruction drives, police organized awareness programs to educate youth and community members about the dangers of drug abuse. At Darul Uloom Nadvi, Muqam Shaheed Mir, students and staff learned about the psychosocial impacts of drugs and the legal repercussions under the NDPS Act. Another session at village Astanpora involved local leaders and residents, emphasizing vigilance and cooperation in identifying drug peddlers and wild cannabis growth.
J&K Police has reiterated its commitment to creating a safe, healthy environment by actively involving religious institutions, educational bodies, and community stakeholders like Lumberdars and Chowkidars. The ongoing drives aim to strike at both the supply chain and demand side of narcotics, ensuring a comprehensive approach to drug eradication.
The police appeal to the public to support these initiatives by sharing information related to illegal cultivation and drug trafficking, reinforcing the region’s collective stand against narcotics.
The intensified anti-drug campaign underscores J&K Police’s unwavering resolve to safeguard the youth and build a drug-free society.
