Srinagar: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq on Wednesday expressed alarm over the large-scale demolition and displacement of tribal Gujjar and Bakerwal communities in Jammu’s Sidra area, alleging selective targeting of communities under the garb of law enforcement.
In a post on X, the Mirwaiz said the development has rendered families homeless and accused authorities of weaponising the law.
“Very disturbing news of large-scale demolition and displacement of the tribal Gujjar Bakerwal community in Jammu’s Sidra area by the authorities, rendering them homeless,” the Mirwaiz said in his post.
He also referred to the filing of an FIR against mourners at the funeral of former Jamaat-e-Islami chief and Islamic scholar Sheikh Ghulam Hassan in Kulgam, as well as the targeting of nomads and tribals in Jammu on the basis of religion without humanitarian consideration.
“Selective targeting of communities under the garb of law enforcement … is weaponisation of law. It vitiates the atmosphere, furthering mistrust,” he said.
The Mirwaiz further said that rulers who claim the well-being and development of Jammu and Kashmir should introspect as to where they want to take the Union Territory through such policies.
