Lashes out at US, Israel from BRICS stage in Delhi
NEW DELHI: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday launched a strong attack on the United States and Israel at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, accusing both countries of violating international law and fuelling instability in the region.
Addressing the gathering, Araghchi said Iran had become the target of what he described as “brutal and unlawful aggression” and urged BRICS nations and the wider international community to take a firm stand against what he called “warmongering” and repeated violations of the UN Charter.
His remarks come at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia, with Tehran repeatedly accusing Washington and Tel Aviv of escalating military and political pressure on Iran. The Iranian minister used the BRICS platform to push for stronger diplomatic backing from emerging economies and called for a more “balanced and humane global order”.
“The attacks on my people have been justified with false claims that run counter to the informed assessments of the International Atomic Energy Agency and even America’s own intelligence community,” Araghchi said during his address.
“The truth is that Iran, like many other independent nations, is the victim of illegal expansionism and warmongering. These are ugly things which have no place in today’s world,” he added.
Araghchi urged BRICS member countries to openly condemn what he termed “illegal aggression” against Iran and prevent the politicisation of international institutions.
“Iran therefore calls upon BRICS member states and all responsible members of the international community to explicitly condemn violations of international law by the United States and Israel,” he said.
He also called for “concrete action” to stop conflict-driven policies and end what he described as the impunity enjoyed by countries violating the UN Charter.
The Iranian Foreign Minister warned that regional instability would eventually hurt all stakeholders, including those initiating conflicts.
“Those who pursue reckless adventures may believe it furthers their geopolitical interests. But as consumers and governments around the world now sense and understand, regional instability is a lose-lose proposition for all sides, including the aggressors,” he said.
Projecting confidence amid rising tensions, Araghchi said the Iranian people had stood firm despite pressure and threats.
He asserted that Iran would continue defending its sovereignty while remaining open to diplomacy.
“Iran is unbreakable and emerges stronger and more united under pressure,” he said, adding that the country would “fight with everything” to defend its freedom and territory.
At the same time, he maintained that Tehran would respond positively to “the language of respect” and continue pursuing diplomatic engagement.
Araghchi also underlined Iran’s support for BRICS, saying the grouping could emerge as one of the key pillars of a fairer global system.
“Iran believes that BRICS can and must become one of the principal pillars in shaping a more just, balanced and humane global order,” he said.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is being held in New Delhi with senior diplomats from member nations discussing global security, economic cooperation and multilateral reforms.
