Man booked for fake SSP Budgam WhatsApp account

Budgam: The J&K Police in Budgam have registered an FIR against an individual for operating a fake WhatsApp account in the name of SSP Budgam.
Police Station Budgam received reliable information that a person, namely Sameer Ali Bhat, son of Ghulam Muhammad Bhat from Pallar, Budgam, was sharing screenshots of chats through a counterfeit WhatsApp account impersonating the SSP Budgam. The individual was allegedly using this fake account to influence the public and pose as a close aide to the SSP.
Verification revealed that the accused is involved in multiple FIRs and was operating the fake WhatsApp account using the mobile number +91-9622126997. He was also sharing conversation screenshots to falsely portray himself as a close associate of the SSP, thereby exerting undue influence.
Acting swiftly on this information, Police Station Budgam registered FIR No. 90/2026 under Section 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66-C of the Information Technology Act.
J&K Police has issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to impersonation scams. Citizens are advised to use only official contact numbers listed on the government’s official website when reaching out to police or government departments. The public is also urged to report any suspicious activity related to such impersonation to the nearest police station promptly, enabling timely legal action.
