Over 50 exporters gain insights on labour code reforms, social security, workforce protection
SRINAGAR: The Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) on Monday organized an exclusive webinar on New Labour Laws/Codes and their impact on the Indian handmade carpet industry to educate and create awareness among its registered member exporters. The webinar was attended by more than 50 member exporters.
Dr. Smita Nagarkoti, Executive Director (Officiating), CEPC, welcomed the dignitaries and members to the webinar.Capt. Mukesh Kumar Gombar, Chairman, CEPC, in his keynote address, apprised participants of the objectives behind organizing the webinar.
Dr. Sanjay Upadhyay, Senior Fellow at V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, in his address, informed that the Government of India has consolidated 29 labour laws into four labour codes with the objectives of simplifying laws, universalizing social security, formalizing the workforce, and promoting ease of doing business while ensuring worker protection.
He elaborated on the four labour codes like Code on Wages, 2019, Code on Social Security, 2020, Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, and Industrial Relations Code, 2020.
The new labour codes provide a robust framework to ensure both economic growth and social justice. If implemented effectively, they can empower artisans—the hands that weave India’s global identity—with dignity, protection, and opportunity.
Tej Bahadur, Former Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), in his address, enlightened members on the impact of the revised definition of “wages” on PF, ESI, gratuity, and leave encashment under India’s labour codes; key changes to be considered while assessing PF, ESI, gratuity, and leave encashment; contract labour: allocation of financial responsibility between contractor and principal employer, and leave encashment in contract labour: wage backstop and scope of applicability.
During the open house session, Dr. Sanjay Upadhyay and Shri Tej Bahadur responded to queries raised by member exporters.
Aslam Mahboob, Vice-Chairman, CEPC, in his closing remarks and vote of thanks, stated that the session was highly fruitful for member exporters. He expressed his gratitude to the distinguished speakers, Capt.
