Thousands of women, girls participate in fitness sessions, sports events, cultural programs
SRINAGAR: Marking a historic milestone, the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports J&K (DYSS) commemorated the 140th International Women’s Day with a grand, statewide celebration emphasizing sports, wellness, and women’s empowerment. The event brought together thousands of young girls and women officials from across the Union Territory, fostering a sense of unity, strength, and resilience.
The highlight of the celebration was an extensive Yoga session held at the Sports Complex, Directorate of YSS, Wazir Bagh. Around 300 students and field officials gathered at the venue, transforming the complex into a lively hub of energy and vitality. To maximize outreach, the yoga session was broadcast live via virtual platforms, enabling participants from remote districts to follow along in real-time. This initiative aimed to bridge the gap between traditional sports activities and holistic health, underlining the importance of physical and mental well-being.
Spearheading this movement was Director General of YSS, Anuradha Gupta, whose vision was to integrate wellness into the fabric of women’s empowerment. Under her guidance, District Youth Services and Sports Offices (DYSSOs) across all districts organized a variety of women-centric sports events—from athletics and indigenous games to cultural competitions—creating an inclusive environment that promotes physical activity and leadership.
In her address, Anuradha Gupta conveyed a powerful message: “True empowerment is a continuous journey rooted in self-belief. By encouraging our young girls to embrace yoga and sports, we are not just nurturing athletes but cultivating leaders who embody discipline, resilience, and grace. When a woman advances, she carries the entire society forward.”
The celebrations extended beyond Srinagar, with each district adding its unique touch to the overarching theme of “Nari Shakti” (Women Power). In Kishtwar, the focus was on the moral and social fabric woven by women’s sacrifices and dedication, emphasizing that women are among the strongest pillars of society. Meanwhile, in Budgam, zonal-level debates and sports activities sparked conversations on gender equality while promoting physical fitness among young girls.
Kulgam district showcased its sporting talent by fielding over 100 female staff members—including PETs and REKs—in tug-of-war and volleyball matches, demonstrating that leadership in sports begins within the department. Bandipora highlighted excellence by felicitating national-level women athletes, such as rugby and kabaddi players Simran Mushtaq and Aakla Bashir, who serve as role models for aspiring young girls.
Poonch district wrapped up the celebrations by awarding medals to participants of the National School Games, with nearly 360 young women showcasing their sporting prowess and highlighting the region’s rich talent pool.
This sweeping effort exemplifies the Directorate’s unwavering commitment to “Sports for All.” Across districts, field officers and students collaborated to shatter stereotypes and promote gender-inclusive sports and recreational activities. The day’s events underscored the transformative power of sports and wellness initiatives in empowering women and fostering societal progress.
The overall celebration was a testament to the growing recognition of women’s vital role in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir—an inspiring reminder that when women move forward, society moves forward with them.
