Must read

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman is all set to take the oath as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Monday. The swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s newly elected government will be held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan.

Meanwhile, party sources indicate that Tarique Rahman has begun forming his cabinet, whose swearing-in ceremony will be held next Tuesday at the South Plaza of the National Parliament.

In the 2026 Bangladeshi general election, held on 12 February 2026, the BNP, led by Tarique Rahman, won a landslide majority with over 151 seats in the 300-seat parliament. The Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami alliance emerged as the main opposition. It was the first election after the 2024 mass protests that ousted long-time leader Sheikh Hasina.

Leaders from 13 countries invited

The Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has invited South Asian leaders from 13 countries to attend the swearing-in ceremony, as per media reports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been invited to the upcoming government swearing-in ceremony. Earlier, PM Modi had extended his warm wishes to Tarique Rahman after the BNP’s victory in Bangladesh’s election. PM Modi wrote on X: “I convey my warm congratulations to Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”

China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan are the other countries invited to the ceremony.

“While South Asian leaders have been invited to the ceremony, several invitations have already been sent. However, due to weekend holidays in those countries, it may take some time, and the attendance of the leaders, especially the Prime Ministers, will depend on their availability at that time,” said sources.
