Profiling of Masjids, Imams gross interference in religious affairs: NC

Must read

Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the reported police profiling of Masjids, Imams, mohalla committees across Kashmir, terming it a “gross and unwarranted” interference in religious affairs of Muslim community only.
In a statement issued from the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha, the party’s State Spokesperson, Imran Nabi Dar, said that such actions amount to a complete violation of fundamental rights, including the right to privacy and protection of personal information, as guaranteed under the Constitution of India.
He emphasized that internal religious affairs cannot be subjected to arbitrary surveillance and intrusive scrutiny. “The nature and depth of information being sought goes far beyond any routine administrative requirement and raises serious questions about the intent behind such measures,” Dar said.
Imran further stated that the move appears to be an attempt to control and regulate religious institutions which is unacceptable in a democratic and secular framework. He urged LG to immediately desist from such practices and uphold constitutional guarantees, religious freedom, and civil liberties.
