VADODARA: Virat Kohli on Sunday overtook Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in international cricket.
The former Sri Lanka captain had 28,016 runs from 666 innings across the three formats, which Kohli overtook during the first ODI between India and New Zealand in Vadodara. The Indian was much quicker, crossing the tally in his 624th innings
Sachin Tendulkar remains the highest scorer in the sport with 34,357 runs in 782 innings. Sachin is also the player with the most hundreds (100) in cricket, followed by Kohli with 84 tons.
On Sunday, Kohli struck a half century as India attempted to chase 301 runs against the Kiwis. This was his seventh-straight score of fifty or more in List A cricket.
The 37-year-old struck two centuries and a fifty during the three-match series against South Africa in December last year. He followed it up with another century and fifty for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Before that, Kohli had struck an unbeaten 77 against Australia in Sydney.
