NEW DELHI: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said that India’s Bullet Train project will be ready by August 15, 2027.

Addressing a Cabinet press briefing in Delhi, Vaishnaw said that the first section of the Bullet Train will open from Surat to Bilimora in Gujarat, followed by two more sections from Vapi to Surat and Vapi to Ahmedabad.

After this, the bullet train services will be expanded to Maharashtra in a phased manner. The first inter-state bullet train section will open from Thane to Ahmedabad, and soon the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad route will be operational.

“The bullet train will be ready in 2027, August 15th, 2027. The first section to open will be from Surat to Bilimora. After that, Vapi to Surat will open. Then Vapi to Ahmedabad will open, and after that, Thane to Ahmedabad will open, and then Mumbai to Ahmedabad will open,” the minister said.

Known as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor, the bullet train project is one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, marking the country’s entry into the era of high-speed connectivity.

The corridor spans approximately 508 kilometres, of which 352 kilometres lie in Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and 156 kilometres in Maharashtra.

The corridor will connect major cities, including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane and Mumbai.

Once completed, the bullet train project will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to around two hours.
