Stakes claim to form govt in Bihar; swearing-in ceremony today

PATNA: National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Wednesday elected Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Nitish Kumar as its Legislative Party Leader, paving the way for the veteran to become the Chief Minister of Bihar for the record 10th time.

Following the Legislative Party meeting, Nitish, along with other NDA leaders, went to Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form government in Bihar.

The swearing-in ceremony of Nitish Kumar will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

Kumar has served as Bihar’s Chief Minister nine times, including a brief seven-day stint in 2000, which ended due to a lack of majority. This will be his 10th term as the Chief Minister of the state.

Earlier today, the BJP chose Samrat Chaudhary as the leader of the Legislative Party, and Vijay Kumar Sinha as the deputy leader. They both are likely to be made deputy chief ministers.

After being elected as the leader of the Bihar BJP legislature party, Samrat Choudhary said, “I thank the party for giving me such a big responsibility. We will work for the progress of Bihar.”

The NDA returned to power in Bihar in the recently concluded assembly polls, winning 202 seats in the 243-member assembly. The BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 89, the JD(U) 85, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 19, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) five, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha four.

The Opposition Mahagathbandhan was completely decimated in the polls and reduced to just 35 seats.
