Div Com Kashmir reviews flood mitigation plan

Srinagar: Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Anshul Garg today convened a meeting of officers to review flood mitigation plan and river management.
The meeting was attended by Commissioner SMC, Fazlul Haseeb; VC LCMA, Chief Engineer I&FC besides other officers of ERA, JTFRP, SDA, UEED & other concerned departments.
At the outset, I&FC officers gave a detailed presentation regarding Topography & Flood issues in Kashmir, Highest Yearly Guage Recording at Sangam (1955 TO 2025), September 2014 Flood & Rainfall Analysis, Flood Management Plan of Jhelum Basin, Prioritization for Execution of Comprehensive Flood Management Plan Works after September 2014 Floods, CWC Recommendations on the CWPRS and EPTISA Model Findings.
The meeting held threadbare discussion on the diversion channel from Jhelum near Sangam to Wular Lake, raising flood walls at selected locations in Srinagar, re-sectioning of Flood Spill Channel, choked portion of Jhelum in Srinagar, Sediment Control basin(s) on identified Jhelum tributaries, Flood zoning and land use regulations besides erosion and sediment control measures on land.
Recently, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said five marlas of land will be provided to each flood-affected family rendered homeless to allow them to reconstruct their dwelling units.
“The year 2025 has brought immense devastation to Jammu and Kashmir — from the dry spell in March-April to incessant rains, flash floods, and landslides in August-September. From Kathua to Kupwara, the damage has been unprecedented,” he had said.
Abdullah had highlighted the scale of destruction, noting that torrential rains have damaged over 350 bridges, around 2,000 km of road network, thousands of hectares of agricultural land, besides washing away standing crops and inflicting damages on both government and private buildings.
“Given the enormity of restoration challenges, Jammu and Kashmir is looking forward to a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package from the Central Government,” he had added.
