SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (Ladakh) chapter, delegation led by its State President Mohd Hassanain Rocky, on Sunday called upon the Member of Parliament, Ladakh, Haji Hanifa Jaan, and submitted a comprehensive memorandum highlighting the pressing concerns of students from Kargil and other parts of Ladakh.
The delegation apprised the Member of Parliament about the urgent need for strengthening educational infrastructure in the region. They stressed the demand for a full-fledged degree college at Sankoo, where students currently study without basic facilities. The establishment of such an institution would provide vital opportunities for higher education to students from remote and underprivileged backgrounds. Similarly, the delegation pressed for the setting up of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in South Block to ensure standardized education in line with NEP 2020 and to bridge long-standing regional disparities.
The memorandum further raised serious concerns regarding the difficulties faced by hostel residents. Students have been burdened by a sharp hike in hostel fees, overcrowded accommodation, particularly at the Girls’ Hostel in Jammu, where many are forced to live in undignified conditions and unreasonably high electricity charges. The Association called for immediate corrective steps to restore transparency, affordability, and dignity in the hostel system.
Issues related to scholarships and recruitment were also discussed in detail. The delay in disbursement of NSP scholarships for the academic year 2024–25 has pushed thousands of students into financial distress. Likewise, the absence of recruitment for Sub-Inspectors in Ladakh Police since 2018 and the irregular recruitment of General Line Teachers have denied local youth employment opportunities. The delegation urged timely action to address these gaps, opposing outsourcing practices and emphasizing the need for stable, transparent recruitment processes.
Speaking on the occasion, State President Mohd Hassanain Rocky said that, The students of Kargil and Ladakh are grappling with multiple challenges, from lack of educational infrastructure to financial hardships. Education is the backbone of Ladakh’s future, and without proper institutions, facilities, and opportunities, our youth will be left behind. We earnestly appeal to the Hon’ble MP to take up these issues at the highest levels and ensure that the rightful educational and employment opportunities of Ladakh’s students are safeguarded.
The Association expressed strong hope that the intervention of the MP would not only help resolve these long-pending issues but also set a new benchmark for equitable and quality education in Ladakh. The delegation reaffirmed that students of Ladakh are not seeking charity but their rightful share in educational opportunities and infrastructure. Ensuring these will not only uplift the youth but also reduce migration, nurture home-grown talent, and contribute to the broader vision of Ladakh’s progress and nation-building.
