Srinagar: Authorities in Kashmir on Saturday announced a 15-day summer break — starting June 23 — in the schools across the valley in the wake of the prevailing heatwave.
The schools across Kashmir would observe the summer break from June 23 to July 7, an order issued by the Director of School Education, Kashmir, said.
“Consequent upon the approval conveyed by the competent authority, it is hereby ordered that all the Government and recognized Private Schools up to Higher Secondary level functioning in the Kashmir Division shall observe summer vacation w.e.f 23-06-2025 to 07-07-2025,” the order read.
Kashmir is currently experiencing a heatwave as the temperatures have soared to record high in the last two decades.
Srinagar witnessed the hottest June day in two decades on Friday as the mercury rose to the maximum of 35.5 degrees Celsius, which was 6.3 degrees above the normal.
On the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, the city recorded 23.2 degrees Celsius –“ the highest night temperature since 1990 when it recorded 23.6.
The all-time highest night temperature in June stands at 24.6 degrees recorded on June 29, 1978.
Meanwhile after the season’s hottest day for two consecutive days, Srinagar witnessed a slight improvement in day temperature as the mercury settled at 34.8 degrees Celsius compared to Friday’s 35.5 degrees.
However, the station was hotter than Jammu where the mercury settled at 33.0 degrees.
As per the details, Kokernag recorded the all-time second hottest June temperature today at 34.2 degrees.
Qazigund – the gateway of Kashmir – recorded a day temperature of 35.0 degrees Celsius while Pahalgam, Kupwara and Gulmarg recorded 29.6 degrees, 34.5 degrees and 25.7 degrees respectively.
Meanwhile, Director of MeT said that generally cloudy weather with intermittent spells of rain and thundershowers is expected at many places till tomorrow.
He said that on June 23 and 24, the weather is expected to remain dry, with a brief spell of light rain and thundershowers at isolated places. From June 25 to 27, generally cloudy weather with the possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places is forecasted.
The MeT has also issued advisory, urging farmers to continue farm operations until June 20.
According to the advisory, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain with intense showers at a few places, mainly in Jammu division, on June 21 and 22. “Flash floods are expected at a few places, along with landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones,” it added
