Muzamil Farooq to speak on sustainable innovation

SRINAGAR: Muzamil Farooq, a Kashmir-born PhD researcher, has been invited to speak at the 80th edition of the United Nations’ General Assembly, Science Summit.
Taking place from September 9 to 26, 2025, the Science Summit (UNGA80) will be a hybrid event in New York City. This year’s summit will explore the critical role of science in addressing global challenges while operating within the Earth’s planetary boundaries to promote sustainable well-being for all. The 2025 theme emphasises the urgent need for responsible scientific practices that honour the planet’s natural limits, aiming to harness innovation in the service of society and future generations.
Muzamil Farooq, resident of Nowgam, Srinagar, will be speaking on “The Role of Universities in Regional Socio-Technical Transitions with a Focus on Specialised Industrial Regions in Europe.”
In addition to his participation at the UNGA, Muzamil will also present his research at the upcoming 7th Global Conference on Economic Geography at Clark University, Massachusetts, USA, from June 4 to 8, 2025. Held once every four years, this prestigious event is among the largest international gatherings of economic geographers.
Muzamil is currently working as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie research fellow in Innovation and Regional Studies at the Centre for Innovation Research, Business School, University of Stavanger, Norway. His research is a part of the European SUNSET Doctoral Network based in Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Estonia and is focused on City-University partnerships to further the twin digital and green transitions across European regions.
Muzamil is affiliated with the Urban Studies Institute, KU Leuven, Belgium, where he will be carrying out part of his research project. He is also a visiting research fellow at, Department of Social Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He is also associated with the NORDIC Edge, a Norway-based non-profit innovation company and accelerator, where he will carry out his field work.
Before joining the University of Stavanger, Muzamil pursued his Master of Science (MSc.) in Science and Technology Policy from the prestigious SPRU-Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex, for which he was awarded the Commonwealth Masters Scholarship by Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Government of the United Kingdom. He is also a member of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network (STRN), Young Scholars Initiative (YSI), Globalics, and other networks of innovation and regional development studies.
