SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent religious leader in Jammu and Kashmir, expressed strong disapproval over the authorities’ decision to prevent a crucial meeting of the Mutahida Majlis Ulema (MMU) regarding the recent Waqf Amendment Act.
In a post on X, he said that the gathering was meant to include religious representatives from across the region, including Ladakh, Kargil, and Jammu, who traveled to engage in a critical discussion on the matter.
Mirwaiz said it is unjust to deny Muslim scholars and religious institutions in the region the right to hold discussions on significant issues affecting their community, especially in a Muslim-majority area. He pointed out the inconsistency in allowing political parties to express their views in the Indian Parliament while restricting religious representatives from doing the same.
Following the meeting’s cancellation, the MMU has decided to read a joint resolution, prepared in consultation with all members, in mosques and during religious congregations this coming Friday. It has expressed its full support for the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), pledging to stand with the board in whatever actions they choose to take regarding the contentious new law.
