Ex-Army Man Shot Dead; Wife, Niece Injured In Kulgam

Srinagar: In the first non-combatant killing of the year, militants shot dead an ex-serviceman and injured his wife and 13-year-old niece in an attack in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday, officials said here.
Details so far indicate that two gunmen armed with pistols arrived at the residence of Manzoor Ahmad Wagay in Beehi Bagh, approximately 10 kilometers from the district headquarters, and opened fire on his family members, which included his wife and niece.
According to initial statements recorded by police and army officials, Wagay, a former member of the Territorial Army, sustained additional bullet wounds while attempting to protect his niece.
Meanwhile, police and security forces have cordoned off the area to nab the attackers.
The Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has strongly condemned the heinous attack on Ex-Serviceman and his family in Kulgam. He paid homage to Manzoor Ahmad Wagay martyred in the terrorist attack.
“I strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack on Shri Manzoor Ahmad Wagay and his family in Kulgam. The entire nation stands in solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of grief. I have instructed the officials to provide the best possible treatment to the injured. Praying for their speedy recovery. I assure the people that the perpetrators of this cowardly attack will be punished soon”, the Lieutenant Governor said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned terrorist attack and expressed heartfelt condolences to the victim family, and prayed for swift recovery of the injured.
The chief minister Omar Abdullah said that such heinous violence has no place in society and must be condemned in strongest words.
Jammu & Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also condemned the attack.
Terming the incident ‘cowardly act’, Bukhari pinned confidence on security forces and said that they will swiftly apprehend the perpetrators of the crime and bring them to justice.
He prayed for the eternal peace to the departed soul and speedy recovery for the injured.
Taking to micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter), Bukhari said: “Deeply saddened to hear that terrorists have attacked and killed an ex-Army man and injured his wife and daughter in the Behi Bagh area of Kulgam. The assailants fired on them at point-blank range”.
“This cowardly attack is highly condemnable, and I strongly denounce this heinous act. I have full confidence that our security agencies will swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” he said on X.
“Praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul and the swift recovery of the injured mother and daughter,” he added on X.
