Srinagar: Flight operations at Srinagar International Airport were disrupted on Sunday due to dense fog and poor visibility.
An official of Srinagar Airport said that early morning visibility at the Srinagar airport was 5 meters which affected the air traffic forcing airlines to push their flights after 10 am.
“However, as the visibility continued to remain poor, the flight operations were cancelled for the day,” he said and advised passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport.
The Meteorological Department has forecast widespread snow and rain over the next 48 hours, with higher altitudes expected to receive heavy snow accumulation.
The snowfall, which started in the evening hours, is likely to affect road transport and daily life across the region. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the lifeline connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country, is expected to be temporarily closed due to snow accumulation and landslides in vulnerable areas. Authorities have issued a weather advisory urging tourists, travellers, and transporters to exercise caution during such severe conditions. In response to the ongoing weather situation, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has set up control rooms to assist residents and travellers. Kashmir is currently in the middle of ‘Chillai Kalan’, the harshest period of winter, which starts on December 21 and lasts for 40 days, offering the highest chances of snowfall. It is followed by a 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold).
