Kashmiris deserve reliable power supply, especially during harsh winter: KCCI

‘Region faces 600 MW power deficit, impacting daily life and local economy’

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I) has expressed grave concern over the ongoing unscheduled power outages that have gripped the region during an especially harsh winter, with temperatures plummeting below freezing. The KCC&I’s alarm comes as the region grapples with a stark 600 MW power deficit, leading to persistent and unexpected power cuts that defy earlier assurances of improved electricity supply.
Despite claims made during the summer that the introduction of smart metering would minimize disruptions, residents are now facing prolonged outages instead. “The situation is far from what was promised,” said a KCC&I spokesperson. “We were assured that smart meters would lead to reduced power cuts, but the reality is that Kashmiris are dealing with frustrating interruptions daily.”
Current reports reveal that power demand in Kashmir has surged beyond 2000 MW, vastly outpacing the allocated supply. The KCC&I has urged the government to take immediate action by procuring additional power to mitigate the hardships faced by residents throughout the winter months. The ongoing crisis highlights a significant lack of progress in enhancing the hydropower capacity of Jammu and Kashmir, further exacerbating the situation.
“The impact of these power outages extends beyond mere inconvenience; they are severely disrupting daily life and have a direct adverse effect on the local economy. Businesses are reporting significant operational losses, and the industrial sector is particularly hard-hit, struggling with productivity and financial stability. Additionally, the healthcare system is facing challenges, especially for patients relying on oxygen assistance at home. Power interruptions jeopardize their well-being and hinder essential services,” the KCCI said.
Education is also facing disruptions, with outages affecting students’ ability to study and attend online classes. Furthermore, tourists are finding their experiences marred by the power cuts, which threaten the vital tourism industry in the region, the Chamber said
In light of these challenges, the KCC&I is calling for immediate and tangible actions from the relevant authorities to address the power crisis. They emphasize the need for sustainable solutions that can support both the local population and the economic activities of the region during the severe winter season.
“The time for assurances is over; we need decisive action now,” the spokesperson concluded. “The residents of Kashmir deserve a reliable power supply, especially during such harsh conditions.”
