Girls are future leaders, change-makers, invest in their potential: DC Shopian
SHOPIAN: ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ was observed on Friday by the Social Welfare and Education Departments at Government Degree College (GDC) Shopian in an endeavour to celebrate girls’ achievements and create awareness for their upliftment.
The function was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar.
Empowering girls is empowering the world, every girl deserves education, equality, and opportunities, DC said while emphasising on the importance of the girls’ right to education and access to quality learning.
The DC also highlighted the importance of the celebration of the day and role of the empowered women for shaping the civilised and developed communities and elaborated on the need for investing in their potential to make them future leaders and change makers.
Various speakers deliberated on different issues confronting the women in the society and advocated for girls’ rights and protection from violence, abuse, and discrimination, encouraging girls’ participation in leadership, supporting girls’ health, reproductive rights and challenging gender stereotypes and societal norms.
On the occasion, girl students who excelled in different fields of academics and activities were felicitated with awards and mementos by the Deputy Commissioner and other officers and their achievements were celebrated with fervour and positivity.
The function was attended by ADC, Dr. Zakir Hussain Faaz; CEO, Shabir Ahmad; DSWO, Ibrar Mirza, and other officers and officials of the Education and Social Welfare department and scores of students, parents and citizens.

‘Educating girls can strengthen economies, reduce inequality’
SRINAGAR: The Department of Social Welfare, SANKALP- Hub for Empowerment of Women- Mission Shakti Srinagar on Friday celebrated ‘International Girl Child Day’ at GGHSS Kothibagh Srinagar under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP).
International Day of the Girl Child is an annual day celebrated on October 11 in recognition of the rights of girls and the challenges they face globally. The Day aims to promote girl’s empowerment and human rights and to address the needs and challenges girls face. The Day is a time to celebrate girls, amplify their voices and advocate for their rights.
The importance of this day is educating girls can lead to them having healthier, more productive lives, earning higher income, and participating in decisions that affect them. It can also strengthen economies and reduce inequality.
The programme started with the Welcome remarks by Ruqaya Ashraf, District Mission Coordinator SANKALP-HEW Mission Shakti Srinagar.
Panel Discussion through Special Guests, interactive session and felicitation of Girl achievers from various fields was also held during the programme.
Panel Discussion on International Day of the Girl Child by various dignified Panelists emphasized on raising awareness about the challenges girls face and fostering empathy and understanding, empowering girls by inspiring them to pursue their dreams and become role models for others.
The various panelists invited for the programme were Dr. Mantasha Binti Rashid, Deputy Director, Rural Sanitation who threw light on the topic Women Supporting women: Gender Equality & Opportunities; Syed Sleet Shah, DySP Hqrs, who discussed about Crime, Policing and Gender-Do’s & Dont’s.
Inayat, CEO Reform Foundation Srinagar shared his views on Financial Independence for girls, through Career Building and Dr. Lubna, Medical Officer PHC Zadibal gave an insightful talk on Reproductive Health of Girls respectively.

DLSA Sgr organizes awareness prog at GBHSS Mujgund
SRINAGAR: In observance of ‘International Girl Child Day,’ the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Srinagar, in collaboration with the School Education Department, Srinagar, on Friday organized an awareness program at Government Boys Higher Secondary School (GBHSS) Mujgund.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Jaffer Hussain Beg, Chairman DLSA/Pr. District and Sessions Judge Srinagar, and under the supervision of Nusrat Ali Hakak, Sub-Judge/Secretary, DLSA Srinagar.
The programme aimed to empower and educate young girls about their legal rights and opportunities. The objective was to promote awareness about issues like gender equality, child marriage and domestic violence, providing girls with the knowledge and resources they need to protect themselves and advocate for their rights.
The program was attended by the principal, staff members and students of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Mujgund, Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel, Sehar Nazir, and Para Legal Volunteers of DLSA Srinagar.
Sehar Nazir, served as the resource person for the program. She captivated the students with her insightful speech, highlighting the significance of girls’ education and their rights. She also emphasized the importance of equal opportunities and encouraged the girls to pursue their dreams, breaking free from societal limitations, urging the participants to actively advocate for their rights and contribute towards a more equitable society.
The enthusiastic participation of the students showcased their eagerness to learn and contribute to a brighter future. The program concluded with a Q&A session where students actively engaged with Sehar, seeking clarification on various legal and social issues.
