PAMPORE: In a concerted effort to curb illegal sand extraction, the Geology and Mining Department Pulwama, along with the Flood Control Department, conducted a joint operation against the illegal sand extraction in Pampore and Kakapora areas of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Tuesday.
The operation aimed to dismantle illegal ramps constructed along the Jhelum River to facilitate the movement of tippers and heavy machinery involved in illegal sand extraction, officials said. Scores of ramps, which were used by sand diggers for illegal sand extraction, were destroyed by the joint team.
Geology and Mining Department Incharge Ishtiyaq Ahmad Shah informed Kashmir Reader that joint raids were carried out by officials of the Geology and Mining Department Pulwama and the Flood Control Department under the directions of District Mineral Officer (DMO) Pulwama, Er Mohammad Manzoor following numerous complaints received by the wildlife department regarding unauthorized sand extraction in these areas, which also led to damage to the Jhelum bunds.
The raids were also conducted in the Samboora area of Pampore and Kakapora.
During the extensive operation, 18 ramps used by sand diggers for illegal sand extraction were destroyed by the joint team, Shah said, adding that they have already issued warnings to illegal miners, urging them to refrain from engaging in such illegal activities, as stern action will be taken against them.
Speaking to Kashmir Reader, the Geology and Mining officer said, “Today, we disconnected various approach paths to river Jhelum used by illegal miners in Samboora and Kakapora areas of Pulwama. Around 18 ramps were cut down during the day-long drive.”
The officials appealed to residents living near Jhelum to inform them about illegal mining activity for prompt action against it. They warned the illegal miners of strict action as warranted under the law.
