Youth drowns while extracting sand from Jhelum in Pulwama

Pulwama: A youth drowned in the Jhelum River while extracting sand at Kakapora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday morning.
Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Reader that the youth, who was extracting sand in the Jhelum at Kakapora, drowned after their boat suddenly capsized. Those present at the spot jumped into the river and tried to rescue the youth but were unable to save him.
The deceased was identified as Showkat Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohammad Akbar, a resident of Lelhar Kakapora. Police officials confirmed the drowning incident to Kashmir Reader that occurred during the sand extraction process.
The body of the youth was retrieved and handed over to his next of kin for the last rites. A pall of gloom descended on the youth’s village after the body reached there.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people participated in the last rites of the deceased young sand digger. During sand extraction in the Kakapora area, many labourers lose their lives every year.
