Pampore: Sumaira Ashiq, a 10th-grade student at Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Tral, has brought laurels to Jammu & Kashmir by clinching a gold medal in a 100-metre racing competition held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The talented athlete’s exceptional achievement was celebrated during an event at the India International Kashmir Saffron Trade Centre (IIKSTC) in Dusoo Pampore.
Union Minister of Heavy Industries, Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, honoured Sumaira Ashiq with a prestigious award and a cash prize of Rs 10,000. The Pulwama district administration also recognized her outstanding performance and presented her with a token of respect, further encouraging her dedication to sports.
The award was presented by the Union Minister Pandey and Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Dr Basharat Qayoom.
Sumaira Ashiq’s remarkable journey in sports includes multiple gold and silver medals over the past year, totalling 11 gold medals and 4 silver medals. Her achievements extend beyond just racing; she is also proficient in martial arts and other sports like Thanga, showcasing her versatile talent and dedication.
Expressing her gratitude, Sumaira Ashiq thanked her sports teachers, parents, and the Pulwama district administration for their support.
“I am actively involved in martial arts and other sports such as Thanga. I am immensely delighted and grateful for the recognition bestowed upon me by Union Minister of Heavy Industries, Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, and Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Dr Basharat Qayoom,” she said.
Sumaira encouraged fellow students, especially girls, to actively participate in sports, emphasizing its importance in promoting physical and mental well-being. Sumaira also highlighted the role of sports in keeping individuals away from harmful influences like drugs.
“My message to everyone is that sports are important; it helps us stay physically and mentally fit,” she said.
