Anganwadi workers threaten agitation if SAC decision not revoked

‘We will work under our own department not Panchayats’

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association (AWHA) on Thursday held a massive protest demonstration here demanding revocation of recent SAC decision to disburse honorarium to Anganwadi workers and helpers under ICDS scheme through Gram Panchayats.
Scores of protestors first assembled in Pratap Park and later blocked the main road of Lal Chowk in front of press enclave. They chanted ‘Revoke the decision’, ‘Do justice with women folk’, and ‘We want justice’.
“We are protesting against the recent decision of State Administrative Council, according to which our honorarium will be given through Panchayats,” President AWHA Tasleema Subhan said and threatened of launching agitation across State if the decision is not revoked.
She said Anganwadi workers and helpers are working under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme and are government employees.
“The women folk will suffer if the decision is implemented in the State. How is it possible that they will hand over the honorarium of Anganwadi centres to Gram Panchayats? We have our own department and will work under that, not under Panchayats,” Tasleema said. “Why was such decision taken only in Jammu and Kashmir?” she asked.
“We are working in the department for the last 40 years, and such decision was never taken by the central or any of the state governments,” she said.
