KUPWARA: Residents of Karnah, assembled under the banner of Tunnel Coordination Committee Karnah, began a three day-hunger strike from Tuesday to protest government failure to construct a tunnel at Nastchan Gali (Sadna Top) on Kupwara-Karnah road.
President tunnel coordination committee Wali Mohammad Qurashi told Kashmir Reader that the committee in its meeting on Monday decided to go for three-day hunger strike against the government for failing to make a tunnel for the people of the remote area.
Qurashi said that they approached several officials in the government but the work has yet not started.
He said the a single road which connects around 84 thousand people of Karnah (in Kupwara) with Kashmir valley remains closed throughout the winter due to snowfall.
Score of people have been killed in road accidents on the Kupwara Karnah road due to landslides, cold, heavy snowfall. Qureshi said that the government had accepted the need for tunnels on the road because of harsh winter conditions, but forget the promise.
A committee was framed by the residents to struggle for the tunnels in 2018.
Residents are now trying to grab the attention of the government through the hunger strike, staged outside Tehsil office at Tanghdar. Protestors are displaying posters and placards highlighting the demand and need for tunnels.
