Brother-in-law confesses, says his own wife had illicit relations with victim’s father
BARAMULLA: The Baramulla police on Sunday claimed they had solved a murder case, which had at first appeared to be a suicide, within a week and had arrested the accused.
In a press conference at Baramulla, the district’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abdul Qayoom said that on June 29, police station Uri received information that a lady named Shahida Begum, wife of Ghulam Mustafa Khatana, resident of Julla Kalgi in Uri, was found hanging in her room apparently after committing suicide. After that a case under Section 174 RPC was registered at police station Uri.
Qayoom said that during the course of investigation, the facts and circumstances preceding the woman’s death raised a fair amount of suspicion. Accordingly, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising Station Head Officer (SHO) Uri and two Assistant Sub Inspectors (ASIs) under the overall supervision of Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Uri was constituted.
Qayoom informed that the husband of the deceased had been working outside the state for the past 6 to 7 months and prior to that he was working in Srinagar. As he was not present in Uri at the time of his wife’s death, various other suspects were called for questioning, one of whom was Qadeer Ahmad Khatana of the same village.
Qadeer was the brother-in-law and cousin of the deceased woman. When he was put under sustained interrogation, he confessed that the woman did not commit suicide but was murdered by him. He also revealed that he had an illicit relationship with her for the past one year.
The police came to know through Qadeer that the woman had recently returned from her maternal home after staying there for about a month. Subsequently, Qadeer had arranged with her to keep the door of her room unlocked, to allow him access, during the night hours.
On the fateful night, Qadeer after having dinner went to sleep in his room as usual along with his wife and kids. After a while, when his wife and kids were asleep, he entered the room of Shahida Begum at midnight. Only a few minutes later, there were heated arguments between the two with regard to their illicit relationship and after their verbal altercation, Shahida warned him that she will disclose about their illicit relationship to other members of the family.
Frightened by Shahida’s threat, and to avenge himself against Shahida’s father, whom Qadeer accused of having an illicit relationship with his wife (Qadeer’s wife), he pulled her scarf around her neck and kept pulling it until she choked to death.
He then hanged the body in her room to make it appear as a suicide, Qadeer told the police.
SSP Qayoom said that a case under charges of murder has now been registered at police station Uri and further investigation is going on.
