Jeweller held for buying stolen jewellery
SRINAGAR: Police in Srinagar have arrested a suspected thief and recovered stolen goods worth Rs 34 lakh from his possession. Police said that jewellery, laptops and cash were recovered from Bilal Ahmad Ganie, a resident of Chatpora, who “used to masquerade as a marriage broker”.
A police statement said that Bilal was involved in eight cases of theft registered in police stations Shergarhi, Shaheed Gunj, Rajbagh, Sadder and Parimpora over the last six months. Bilal’s arrest, police said has solved six cases of theft, while a jeweller at Hari Singh High Street has also arrested for buying the stolen jewellery.
“The bank account which contains the cash obtained after liquidating the stolen property has also been freezed in accordance with the law,” police said. Earlier, police said, a special team constituted by SSP Srinagar Haseeb Mughal tracked activities of suspect Bilal through scientific and human investigative techniques.
“Subsequently, police recovered gold jewellery, laptops along with the currencies of several countries from his possession. He has been taken into custody.” Police has informed complainants to recognize their stolen property and get it released from court.
