SHOPIAN: A lone municipal park in Shopian town has been abandoned by authorities since years despite the fact that over a crore rupees were spent by government on its development years ago. Residents from the town said that the park situated besides Municipal Committee office was closed and abandoned by government due to unknown reasons while the children have no place to play.
Majid Ahmad, a local said that despite being the lone park in the town, authorities have failed to maintain it. “This park, for a couple of years, was being used as a dumping site that too after huge amount was spent by government on it. Then they used it as a yard to place dustbins which were taken back from town areas in 2016 uprising,” he said. Another local said that the park was also being used as parking slot for some time but later a lock was put on the gate turning it into place for stray dogs with weeds all around.
“Our children have no place to go. Despite repeated pleas to government, our demands were ignored and put into dustbins by district administration,” Javid Ahmad, another local said. A group of locals said that when the administration has failed to maintain this small park how come they expect establishment of any other park in the town. “This Muncipal Park wouldn’t be 100 x100 feet long but despite that government has failed to develop it,” Sajad Ahmad, a resident said.
“We request the district administration to develop it soon so that children have a place to play,” another resident said. Executive Officer Muncipal Committee Shopian, Imtiyaz Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that they hope works on the park are completed this year. “Last year we spent six lakh rupees and more works on this are proposed this year,” he said.
