PUF protests traffic ban on Kashmir highway

‘Withdraw security and see how Kashmir Muslims will facilitate yatra’

SRINAGAR: The Peoples United Front (PUF) – alliance of Jammu Kashmir Peoples Movement and Awami Ittehad Party – Friday held a protest demonstration in Srinagar demanding immediate revocation of restrictions on civilian traffic and train services on the Kashmir highway in view of Amarnath Yatra.
Scores of PUF activists led by former lawmaker Engineer Rasheed assembled at the press enclave here holding placards reading slogan like “Revoke highway and train restrictions” and “We love Yatris”.
Rasheed said that the restrictions on public transport, has severely affected people, particularly students, patients, government employees and business community.
“Due to restrictions on the highway, people living in south Kashmir are worst affected. The vehicles are stopped on the highway which directly affects businesses in Kashmir,” Rasheed said.
He also took a dig at National Conference (NC) stating that people have a right to know what NC was doing over the issue.
“NC is crying about just votes and elections. If party claims to be representing regional aspirations, it must join hands with other parties to fight the state suppression. However they having three MPs in Lok Sabha, the party seems to have compromised everything,” Rasheed said.
“The students do not reach colleges, universities, and school on time. We demand immediate revocation of orders about the restrictions on highway and train services.”
He also challenged government to withdraw security cover on highway “and see how Kashmiris Muslims will facilitate and protect the Yatris and make Yatra a success”.
Authorities have barred civilian traffic on 97-km stretch between Qazigund and Ramban on the Kashmir highway for five hours daily (10am -3pm), besides suspending train services on Qazigund-Banihal track during the same time period to “facilitate smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra”.
