High tension line running over Budgam school, authorities unmoved despite requests

Budgam: Students of Government Middle School Hamchipora here are living under constant threat due to high tension (HT) wires dangling over the school.
Kashmir Reader had reported the issue in 2017, and authorities then had assured for early redress, but nothing seems to have moved since.
Official sources added the school is not the only with 11,000 volt wires passing over it, but few other schools also operate under the threat.
In the past, a live wire fell in the school lawn during working hours once, but the students luckily escaped unhurt. Still the Power Development Department (PDD) has turned a blind eye towards the issue.
“I am constantly worried about my children. The high tension wire can prove fatal at times,” a parent said. “We have many times written to PDD and Education department but to no avail”.
He added that if the issue isn’t fixed on priority, he would be forced to move his child to another school.
Javaid Ahmad Lone, a teacher posted at the school, said that the HT line passing right over the school lawn was a constant threat.
“We always remain concerned about the safety of the students. The wire has been creating hurdles in smooth functioning of school,” Lone said.
Lone said, they also took up the issue with the “Back to Village” team recently.
Executive Engineer, PDD Budgam, Mohammed Hussain Shah, when contacted, told Kashmir Reader that the issue would be fixed shortly.
“We redress school issues on priority basis,” he said.
